History

Mountaindale Farm in Bloomfield, King’s County, has been operating since 1943 when W. G. Coulter (shown right) bought the present farm after moving from Snider Mountain. For many years Walter Coulter and his son Seldon bred Guernsey cattle for milk and cream. Since the mid seventies the farm has been operated by Mr. Coulter’s grandson Richard Brown and his wife Heather. The farm has moved from dairy production to vegetables and beef production. The land has been certified organic by the Maritime Certified Organic Growers (MCOG) and the Browns sell direct to the public at their farm market at the end of their driveway; civic number 620 Highway 121.

Mountaindale Farm is unique in the organic world in that this farm raises both animals and vegetables. Rather than just specialize in vegetables or beef, Mountaindale Farm has adopted the old time idea of a true mixed farm allowing the cattle to compliment the vegetables with organic compost and the lower quality vegetables to be feed to the cattle. Mountaindale Farm has also found that their customers like to deal with a grower who can fill a large part of their food basket.
